James Daniels

On December 18th, 2007, James Daniels went in for routine back surgery to replace a disc. The surgery was supposed to last one to two hours but immediately upon opening him up, a major vein was torn and the doctors spent a total of seven hours trying to stop the hemorrhaging and save his life. During this process, they had to stop the blood flow to and from his left leg. Because of the lack of blood flow, his leg has suffered tissue damage. On January 22nd, it became necessary to amputate his left leg. James kidneys were also affected due to the tissue damage and he is having dialysis daily. He is currently on a ventilator and is heavily sedated. He is at Northridge hospital and visitors are welcome. The hospital hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.. As you will not be able to see or visit James you can visit Cathy and others as they would love to see you.

Please pray for James complete healing, for Cathy and family, for strength to endure and for wisdom for the doctors and nurses and that God would be glorified.

Past Updates:

April 30th - Another day without changes in James' condition. Thank you for your faithful prayers.

April 29th - No change in James' condition today. Please continue to pray as a second opinion is still being sought.

April 28th - James had dialysis today and received two units of blood. Still high white counts and fever. A second opinion is being sought in the hope of surgically removing the infected tissue deep inside James' body. In the past we have been told this approach is impossible, but the doctors are seeking outside opinions again. They are diligently trying every means possible to rid James of this terrible infection. Please pray that if this surgery can be successfully performed that the Lord will direct the critical care team to the right surgeons. Whatever the outcome we trust in God's sovereignty. "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in Him," Lamentations 3:22 - 24. "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps," Proverbs 16:9.

April 27th - The test on James' infection in the pelvic cavity has come back positive. The infection is still there. James still has fever and high white counts. Please continue to pray for James as the doctors will be discussing the results over the next few days and what, if anything, may be changed in his treatment.

April 25th - James was about the same today. Still high white blood cell counts, fever, but no dialysis. A test on the pelvic infection was performed by the radiologist today. These results can take up to 72 hours. This area, as you know, is what has not responded to antibiotics and the biggest concern in James' recovery. Please pray for wisdom as the doctors make their evaluations, that there will be no sign of infection, and that this will be a turning point in James' healing.

April 24th - James had dialysis today. Other than this there were no changes in his condition.

April 23rd - James came off the blood pressure support early in the morning and fever is down. No other changes today. Thank you for praying for James.

April 22nd - James had dialysis today. His blood pressure dropped and required medication to support him. As of this evening his pressure has not recovered and remains on medication. His temperature had been normal for the past few days, but has gone up this evening to 100. James' pain and sedation medications are being reduced gradually to make sure he is not getting more than necessary. He is adjusting appropriately to the changes in that he remains comfortable.

April 21st - There were no changes in James' condition today. Please keep him in your prayers.

April 20th - James had dialysis today. His blood pressure required support through medication during the process, but he recovered well and is no longer on it. Fever is low. Thank you for your prayers.

April 19th - For the second day in a row, James did not have dialysis. And he is off the medication for blood pressure support. His fever is down, too. Overall, today was a fair day and we rejoice in this! However, please remember that even with small signs of improvement in one day do not change the fact that James is still critical and very sick. The doctors have always advised us not to get too excited on good days, and not to get too upset on bad days. This is a long road and we still do not know what the outcome will be. Please pray that James will continue to have days of improvement leading to complete healing. In all things we trust our sovereign God!

April 18th - There were no changes in James' condition today. There may be some new tests next week on the pelvic infection. Pray for wisdom for the doctors on this.

April 17th - James required two units of blood today along with dialysis. He is still on medicine to support his blood pressure. Thank you for your faithful prayers.

April 16th - James did not have dialysis today. Unfortunately his fever has returned and his blood pressure has not normalized since yesterday so he remains on medication. Please continue to pray for James as we wait out these days of little or no change.

April 15th - James had dialysis today and once again required medication to support his blood pressure during the three hour procedure. His pressure is still too low to come off the medication and we are praying it will stabilize overnight. The results of the CAT scan show no marked changes in the pelvic infection. The high white blood cell counts are attributed to this infection and his wounds. Good news today - no fever. Praise be to our gracious God.

April 14th - James did not require dialysis today. Other than this, he is unchanged from yesterday. He had the new CAT scan today and we will have better information tomorrow on the results. Thank you for your prayers on this test. He didn't have to ingest the contrast solution!

April 13th - James required medication through the night to support his blood pressure, but by early morning he was stable without it. No change in fever and high white blood cell counts. The CAT scan will be repeated tomorrow due to some conflicting results. Please pray for James in preparation for the test. The contrast that is fed directly into his stomach makes him nauseous and has made him sick. In addition, please pray for definitive results.

April 12th - James did not require dialysis today. He did however require medication for blood pressure support and his white blood cell counts are high. We are still waiting for complete details on the CAT scan. Please continue to pray for healing in James, wisdom for the doctors and all who are involved in his care.

April 11th - James had dialysis today assisted with medication to support his blood pressure. Three and a half liters of fluid were removed in the process. He still struggles with fever and very high white blood cell counts. A CAT scan was performed late today, not only to evaluate the pelvic infection, but also to determine if their is another reason for the persistent fever. The results will be available in the next day or two.

April 10th - James' fever reached nearly 102 today so the infectious disease doctor has again taken a variety of cultures to determine the cause. No dialysis today which means that his kidneys have a SLIGHT improvement. Please remember that James is still so very sick and needs our fervent prayers. Thank you.

April 9th - James required dialysis today with the assistance of blood pressure support. Sometimes his pressure will drop too low during the process and requires the aid of medication. His fever still remains along with high white blood cell counts. Another CT scan will be done by early next week to evaluate any change in the infection of the pelvic area. Please continue to pray.

April 8th - Another day with no change to James condition other than that he did not have dialysis today. His fever is still around 100.7 and he continues on with 5 different antibiotics to fight his various infections. Please continue to pray diligently for the Daniels family.

April 7th - There were no changes in James condition again today. Please continue to lift up the Daniels family in prayer.

April 6th - No changes in James condition today. Please continue to pray for healing.

April 5th - Another day where James is basically unchanged. High white blood cell count, fever, dialysis. His blood pressure is creeping lower again which will be assisted with support when necessary.

April 4th - James remains unchanged over the past few days. These are long days, but we wait patiently, faithfully trusting that the Lord's perfect will is being accomplished in James and in this trial. Thank you for your prayers.

April 3rd - James still has low fevers and elevated white blood cell counts. A nuclear study was performed to see where the white cells are collecting. His wounds are the primary area where the cells are collecting as they continue in the healing process. Thank you for your faithful prayers.

April 2nd - James continues with low grade fever and elevated white blood cells. His blood pressure has been on the low side after dialysis today. Please continue to pray for Gods healing hand.

April 1st - James temperature fluctuates around a low grade fever along with white blood cells continuing to rise. His blood pressure is stable WITHOUT medication today. No dialysis was done, as his lab values were acceptable for a day off. Due to a leak, his tracheostomy tube was replaced. Please pray for James and Cathy through this very long trial.

March 31st - James condition is unchanged from yesterday; still fever and blood pressure maintained by medication. Please continue to pray. With God, there is both hope and promise. "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every mornlng; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him." Lamentations 3:22-24

March 30th - Today James had a fever of 102 along with elevated white blood count. During dialysis four liters of fluids were removed. Please continue to pray.

March 29th - Not really any change today; his fever was around 100.6 and his blood pressure was maintained within normal limits with medication. Dialysis continues and his infections are treated with the four different antibiotics. Please continue on in the privilege of prayer.

March 28th - James continues to have a multitude of different infections with various bacteria. His vitals were minimally outside the normal range and daily dialysis has been required. Please continue to pray and praise the mighty hand of God through this long and difficult trial. "The works of His hands are faithful and just; all His precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast for ever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness" Psalm 111: 7-8

March 27th - James fever was down and his blood pressure remained strong with less medication. After review of his pelvic CAT scan, the doctors feel that the infection may be affecting a surrounding area. A different antibiotic will be given for six to eight weeks to fight this infection.

March 26th - James had a CAT scan of the abdominal/pelvic area and the results were unchanged from the previous scan.(no better but at least no worse) Two units of blood were given during dialysis. He continued with a low grade fever and his blood pressure remained adequate. Your faithful prayers are greatly appreciated.

March 25th - James temperature varied only slightly today with a low fever. Four liters of fluids were removed during dialysis. He was ever so slightly awake; just enough for him to acknowledge Cathy. Please pray for the peace of God to surround and fill him through his confusion and sadness.

March 24th - James fever is down today. He had dialysis with as much fluid removal as tolerated. Please continue to pray and don't give up hope. God is actively at work to accomplish His perfect will. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eves on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." Hebrews 12:1-3

March 23rd - James had fever of 102 even with medication. The doctors are examining every possibility. Dialysis with fluid removal were performed. Please, please pray.

March 22ndThere was difficulty in removing three liters of fluids during dialysis today. An increase in blood pressure medication was required to maintain adequate levels. He remained stable at that dosage. The doctors continue to be very concerned about his various problems including his kidney functions, infection in the pelvic area, the healing of his multiple wounds, as well as the sepsis. Please pray for wisdom for the doctors, peace and perseverance for Cathy and for Gods perfect will to be accomplished in James life. "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God..." Isaiah 43:2-3a

March 21st - James continues with a low grade fever even with medication. His white blood cells are also elevated again (indication of infection). Dialysis was completed with three liters of fluids removed. A slight increase in blood pressure medication was required to maintain adequate levels. Thank you for your continued prayers.

March 20th - Not much change today; James had intermittent fever around 101 and received dialysis with five liters of fluid removed (that's eleven pounds of fluids). Please remain faithful with Cathy and family through this long trial to keep James continually in prayer.

March 19th - James had a quiet day, maintaining adequate blood pressure throughout dialysis while two liters of fluids were removed. He did have a slight fever today. Although James condition remains mostly unchanged, he continues to be critically ill, giving us privilege and opportunity for continued prayer and support. "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer " Romans 12:10-12

March 18th - James had dialysis, removed four liters of fluid and received two units of blood. His pain medication has been completely changed over and after some adjustments, he seemed to be comfortable. Once again he has yeast infections in various places and medications have been resumed. There has been no fever today but blood pressure medications were required to maintain adequate levels. Please continue to lift James and family in prayer.

March 17th - Five liters of fluid were removed today during dialysis as James continues to retain large amounts of fluids. Kidney functions have decreased somewhat since his last surgery (March 8th). Adjustments of medications are still being made to keep James sedated and as comfortable as possible. "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I put my hope." Psalm 130:5

March 16th - James condition remains unchanged. Your prayers are fervently needed and appreciated as he is still critically sick.

March 15th - James medications are in a transitional state to keep him stable, comfortable and minimize side effects. Blood pressure was on the low side and he has remained without fever. Three liters of fluids were removed during dialysis. Please continue to pray for Gods perfect and complete will to be accomplished in James as well as for those whom his life has touched.

March 14th - Today James had his wound vac/dressing change. Also, three liters of fluids were removed during dialysis. Otherwise a quiet day. James is still critically sick and he and Cathy need your prayers as they continue through this long trial.

March 13th - James condition remains the same. No dialysis today although Lasix was given to help reduce the excessive fluids. Please keep on praying. Thank you so much.

March 12th - James remains the same today. He had dialysis and three liters of fluids were removed. The preliminary report for the brain scan appears to be normal. Your faithful prayers are forever appreciated. "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9

March 11th - Dialysis was given and fluids were removed as tolerated. A CAT scan was done of both the pelvic area and also the brain to check for inflammation. The pelvic area is unchanged; no more, no less infection. Results for the brain scan are not in. Please continue to trust in the perfect timing and will of God.

March 10th - Four liters of fluid were removed during dialysis today and it appeared to relieve some of the extreme swelling. His vitals remained stable with medications. He looked restful all day. Please continue on in prayer.

March 9th - James was restful for most of the day. He did have one wake period where Cathy could see that he was truly sad. This is very difficult to see. With kidneys still in failure, he again had dialysis where they were able to remove three liters of excess fluids and additionally give him some blood products. His vitals were stable with only a low grade fever. Pain levels are maintained with extremely high doses of morphine and two different sedation medications. He continues to be supported by ventilator. "I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised..." Psalm 18 1-3a

March 8th - Praise God for all He does! The doctors came out of surgery at 5:30 p.m. with positive news about the bleeding. They were able to cauterize the many tiny bleeds that were found in an area where the gluteal muscle was previously removed, (surgery from Feb.27), and a skin flap was turned into its place. There is still concern about the possibility of future bleeding. James is not producing red blood cells adequately and with the additional blood loss from the wound, he required numerous units of blood (12+) in the last 24 hours. His vitals have remained stable with medication. Please, please pray for James improvement and for strength and perseverance for Cathy and the family during this extremely long and difficult trial.

March 8th - James will be having surgery around 3:00 p.m. today to repair another area that is bleeding. The doctors say that this is very serious. Just please pray diligently for James' care in this critical time. Stay tuned for more updates.

March 7th - During dialysis it was noted that James had new bleeding. They found that the femoral artery (in the groin area) was bleeding out. His doctor was notified and emergency surgery was performed by the vascular surgeon from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Repair of this artery was successful but the doctors are fearful of the outcome if this were to happen again. James vitals are stable with medication and he appears to be comfortable at this time A reminder to all of us: "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:28-31

March 6th - Thankfully James was very restful today after a new sedation medication was underway. His blood pressure was low (possibly due to the new medication) so they had to resume his blood pressure medication to counter the effect. Even though he appeared to be retaining fluids, he did not have dialysis as his lab value were acceptable. Please continue to pray as time goes on for encouragement and perseverance for Cathy and the doctors and for God's perfect will to be completed.

March 5th - The doctors are having difficulty managing James pain. He continues to wake up and be in severe pain even though his sedation medicine is high and his morphine dosage is very high. Even with all these medications, his blood pressure hasn't dropped (could be due to his agitation level). Please be praying for wisdom for the doctors and nurses as they care for James. This is uncharted territory for them as well as for Cathy and the family.

March 4th - James had several wake periods with episodes of great pain which required an increase in pain medication. The new additional pain medication was introduced today and the staff will be monitoring his vitals and watching for its effectiveness. Dialysis was done and no added blood products were needed. Please continue to pray and trust in Him. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

March 3rd - James had periods of being awake but was mostly disoriented and his pain level was very high. Morphine was increased and his sedation medicine was pushed directly into his I.V. line to decrease his pain. It took many hours before we really saw him comfortable. A pain management doctor was brought in for consultation and a new medication will be added to his treatment of care. The infection in the pelvic area is unchanged as of now. Pain management and infection control are areas of great concern requiring our constant prayers.

March 2nd - James physical condition is basically unchanged. His blood pressure was strong enough today that the nurses were able to discontinue his blood pressure medicine. Again he had no fever. He did have many periods of being awake but in these times he was anxious and confused. It is so important to continue on in prayer. James may know that he is very sick but many things are still so unclear to him (partially because of the sedation medications that he has been on for so long). Continue in faith through prayer with thanksgiving.

March 1st - James had dialysis as scheduled for today. His vitals were stable with medications and he seemed to be resting quietly. Please continue to pray.

February 29th - James required dialysis again today and may require it all weekend. Excess fluids were removed as much as possible through dialysis. He also needed two units of blood and two units of blood products. One doctor described his need for additional blood due to a decrease in blood production and also from the drainage from his wounds. The doctors are still very concerned about the health of his kidneys as well as the many other systems of concern. Blood pressure and temperature were adequately maintained with medication. James did seem to be resting quietly for most of the day. Thank you for your continued prayers.

February 28th - A fairly quiet day it was. James had dialysis and was given two units of blood and two units of blood products. They also removed approximately two liters of excess fluids. Fever often follows surgery as it did for him today. Morphine was increased for his elevated heart rate which could be an indication of pain but he was not showing visually signs such as wincing or grimacing. Keep praying for James and trust in the almighty God.

February 27th - We are thanking God that He has allowed James to survive another surgery. The surgery went very well today. They removed the rest of the femur bone from the socket joint and the wound size was decreased due to the revision. His vitals remained stable during surgery but he did require six units of blood. The doctors are encouraged to see that the kidneys are functioning at an improved level (still not normal but better) and that the pelvic area CT scan has not worsened. All in all, very good news. James continues to be very critical; there is still much healing needed and other hurdles to overcome. Please continue to pray in faith with much thanksgiving for all He has done and continues to do.

February 26th - The CT scan of the abdomen was unchanged from the previous. He had dialysis today and was given 3 units of blood as well as three liters of fluids were removed (James is very edematous - fluid retention). The leg revision surgery is scheduled for 2:30 tomorrow. There are risks involved but the anticipated benefits outweight the risk. I can't urge you enough to continue on in prayer (and fasting) and make our requests to God. "We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. May Your unfailing love rest upon us, oh Lord, even as we put our hope in You." Psalm 33:20-22

February 25th - The results are not in for the pelvic area CT scan that was performed today. It was a very busy day with the scan, a picc line change and his very elaborate dressing changes. The wound specialist nurse as well as the orthopedic surgeon were present. Some of the wounds are healing but the leg wound needs to be revised again. The surgery is scheduled for Wednesday at 2:30. This will be a very difficult surgery with him being unstable and the possibility of blood loss during surgery, but the area needs to be removed. This has been such a long battle not only for James and Cathy but also for the doctors and nurses. Please pray for their strength and perseverance during this time along with our requests for James to our great God.

February 24th - James condition remains the same today. Please continue to pray for James best, for strength for Cathy and the family, wisdom for his doctors and compassion and guidance for his caregivers.

February 23rd - James had dialysis today and received blood. His condition is unchanged and critical. It is our privilege to continually bring him before our loving Father. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

February 22nd - An infection has been found in one of James previous surgery areas and a different antibiotic is being given. Otherwise his conditions remains the same. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

February 21st - Another day with little changes. The doctors have found James has a sinus infection and have added a new antibiotic. He is still so sick. Don't grow weary in praying. We know God is presently at work in this; now and/or later. "However, as it is written: 'No eye has seen, nor ear has heard no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love HIm'" 1 Corinthians 2:9

February 20th - Today was uneventful for changes in James condition. Medications have been adjusted higher and lower according to the need of the day (fever, blood pressure and pain medications). Please continue to pray and trust. "You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light" Psalms 18:28

February 19th - James fever continues to be controlled by Tylenol and a higher dose of medications was required to maintain adequate blood pressure. James had a short period where he seemed to be out of sedation (maybe 5-10 minutes). He looked sad and distressed but what calmed him was beautiful - the name of Jesus and a reminder that He never leaves us. "The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10

February 18th - James had dialysis today with excess fluids removed and two units of blood given. His temperature remains normal but an increase in medicine was required to maintain adequate blood pressure. All other areas of concern remain the same. Today was the blood drive in honor of James. Thank you all who came to give blood. There was such an overwhelming response that even some were turned away and will have to give at another location and time. Sixty-two units of blood were donated. James is truly loved. The show of love is so amazing to see; your love and Gods love toward us.

February 17th - James preliminary test results for the abdominal fluid came back negative. They have a five day growth period for the final results. He had minimal fever and blood pressure within normal limits with the support of medication. Thankfully no new problems but still critically sick. We wait in the faithfully loving and capable hands of our Lord.

February 16th - There was little change in James condition today. The paracentesis (surgical tapping of a fluid-filled body cavity to withdraw fluid) of the abdomen was done successfully and the fluid will be tested for infection. This accumulation of fluid often happens with the very sick in prolonged care but we are praying that it has not become infected. Please continue thanking God for his goodness and love.

February 15th - James didn't have a fever today and his blood pressure was maintained with medication. He also did not have dialysis but Lasix (a diuretic) was given in hopes of removing some excess fluids. The CT results revealed fluid in the abdominal area. They will be inserting a tube in hopes of removing the fluid and testing it to see if there is infection at this site. Infection is the enemy. For the pelvic area, it has not changed much. The drain is in the correct position however there is little drainage. Wound dressings were changed today and while the doctors were pleased to see some healing in those areas, James remains VERY sick. He is critical and these are critical days. Please continue to pray as God works in James and in all the circumstances surrounding him.

February 14th - James temperature and blood pressure were within normal limits even with a decrease in his medication. His morphine was increased but still James responded intermittently with eyes open sometimes accompanied with a smirk but also at times with a grimace. He had another CT of the pelvic area but we have not received the report. Please continue to pray.
"Trust in Him at all times, O people. Pour out your hearts to Him; for God is our refuge." Psalms 62:8

February 13th - We were disappointed to see a higher fever today (101.8). Ice packs along with Tylenol were used to reduce this but only to 101. A higher dose of blood pressure medicine was given to treat James struggling pressure and it remained within normal limits at the end of the day (with continued meds). Dialysis was not needed nor was blood given. There did appear to be an increase in drainage from his wounds possibly agitated from todays dressing change. Also one of his antibiotics was changed in hopes of a better response to the infections. Keep praying. What comfort we have knowing the almighty hand of God is in control. Praise His Name!

February 12th - James remained with a low fever today. He had dialysis including receiving some blood and blood products and also removing (as they often do) two liters of fluid from his body (when your so sick your body retains excess fluid around the cells). Morphine and Ativan (sedation medicine) doses were also increased to keep him comfortable. Unfortunately, his blood pressure was unstable so his medication has been doubled. So we wait; trusting our Mighty God and comforter. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." Psalms 46:1-3

February 11th - James remained about the same today. His blood pressure is being supported by medication, his fever is on the low side, and he had dialysis today. It is disappointing that he has not demonstrated any improvement in his infections, but we must continue to pray that the antibiotics he has been on will begin to heal his body. Please also pray for wisdom for all his caregivers.

February 10th - James blood culture did come back positive, confirming sepsis at this time. The tests also showed staphylococci (staph). The antibiotics he is presently on should cover these infections. His vitals (supported by medication) have not changed much since yesterday. James appeared to respond to some conversations around him. Keep praying. God is our hope and we will trust in Him.

February 9th - James blood pressure was maintained within normal limits with medication and has had minimal fever all day. Increased morphine and sedation medicine kept him looking comfortable and he did not need dialysis. Continue bringing requests before our gracious God; willing to yield with thanksgiving to His perfect plan. Reminder: We have added new appointment slots for the blood drive in James honor. Please make an appointment by clicking the "Blood Drive Sign Up" picture above, if you are planning on donating blood. Thank you so much!

February 8th - Today we had our meeting with six of James primary doctors, his wound nurse, attending nurse, case worker and social worker. There was much discussion about James condition and what can be done next. The consensus is that the infection in the pelvic area is inoperable at this time with James instability and varying wounds. His antibiotics and blood pressure medicines will be continued with hopes of improvement. Although his blood culture came back negative, he continues to show signs and symptoms of sepsis. Continue to pray FERVENTLY for James, for Cathy and all the family. Give praise to our Almighty, Sovereign and Loving God and pray with thanksgiving for the great love He has for us all and for the perfect plan He has in mind.

February 7th - The meeting is tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. to discuss James care. Please keep this time in prayer. The infectious disease doctor confirmed the infection in the pelvic area. They do not know to what degree as to total area affected. They are also not sure if this area is operable. This will be discussed tomorrow. A plastic surgeon came in today to give his opinion on possible surgeries in the future. At this time he is not a candidate for these surgeries with James being septic and unstable. But, God is Faithful no matter what! Isaiah 25:1 O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things you planned long ago.

February 6th - James has been receiving Tylenol today to keep his fever low and reduce stress on his body. He had two CT scans of the pelvic cavity today; with and without dye. They were able to see the area in question and drain off 10cc of fluid and put in a tube in hopes of draining more. The intent is that without the excess fluid that the antibiotics will be able to work more efficiently. The blood culture results are not in but the doctors are saying he's showing signs and symptoms of sepsis. Although James has had this before, the doctors are VERY concerned. A meeting is being scheduled for Friday with James doctors to discuss his care. In this, please pray for wisdom and continue to rest in His care.

February 5th - James continued to have fever today and his blood pressure was low but responded well with support of medication and fluids. He did have dialysis with hopes of removing excess fluid (around the cells) throughout his body. ACT scan of the pelvic area is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.. With those results, the doctors will decide about the possibility of draining a fluid pocket in that area. We are waiting on a blood culture to see if James is septic again. These symptoms as well as some others are pointing in that direction. Please keep praying and trust our God who knows best.

February 4th - Because of the degree of James wounds, he has a nurse who is a wound specialist who comes in to attend his wounds and change the dressing and vacuums. The surgeon is often present to assist and evaluate. James had those dressings changed today. The doctor (as well as his specialty nurse) was happy to see an improvement (even a little improvement). Blood was given this morning and his blood pressure was strong this afternoon and evening. He did have dialysis today but it was only marginally needed. Unfortunately, he had a fever of 102. His pain medication as well as sedation medication was slightly decreased which allowed Cathy some brief moments with James. It appeared James was somewhat aware but also sad. This is a time to not only pray for physical healing but also for his emotional and spiritual strength and fortitude.

February 3rd - James received one unit of blood along with some blood products today. His blood pressure had been low but returned within normal range after receiving the blood. Again James did not require dialysis. The doctors continue to keep James sedated for optimum healing. Please continue to pray and trust our mighty God.

February 2nd - There is not much new information. James had fever last night but it has been normal today. His blood pressure has been on the low side and he had another day without dialysis. Please keep praying for the tissue to heal and for the infections to cease but we will continue to trust His timing and His will.

February 1st - James was able to go these last two days without dialysis. His kidneys are improving but only to a small degree. There was no fever but his blood pressure was low and he seemed to be uncomfortable. His Morphine level has been increased dramatically in the last week and with low blood pressure they have to be very careful before increasing the morphine to a higher level. The wound nurse changed his dressing today and commented that she had hoped to see more healing. We continue to pray and wait --- but wait with the purpose of glorifying God.

January 31st - James has a wound vacuum over his open wounds that removes secretions or blood from those areas to promote healing. One of the wounds now has the femoral artery exposed. A special dressing has been applied over this area. The nurses and doctors will be monitoring this very carefully so the vacuum does not cause hemorrhaging. Thankfully the nurses doing James care are on a one to one basis so they can be very attentive. James blood pressure was a little low today and he had a low fever (99 - 100.3). For a brief moment, Cathy was able to communicate with James ever so slightly. With eyes wide open, he tried to smile and move his lips to talk but the trach won't allow any sound. When Cathy asked him if he was in pain, he shook his head "no". It is so comforting for Cathy to connect with him even in the slightest manner. Thank you Lord, for the little glimmer of our James. Please continue to pray as James is so very sick but keep in mind to measure the size of this obstacle against the size of our mighty God.

January 30th - We met with three of the doctors for a conference to discuss James latest test results and what would be the next mode of treatment. The radioactive cells that were introduced into his blood did not gather in the pelvic cavity which is good news. Because the CT scan indicated an enlarged pelvic area, the doctors took a sample which more than likely indicated VRE (vancomycin resistant enterococci - an infection common to patients with long term hospital care). The antibiotics he is currently on should cover this kind of infection. Basically, we will again be waiting to see how James body reacts to this infection. Again, fever might indicate concern about the pelvic area but fever also could indicate infection in other areas like any one of the lines going into his body. Please continue to pray for the doctors and nurses as they care for James. Remember to pray with thanksgiving for the many blessings we've seen.

January 29th - A new test was done today that made James radioactive (no pregnant ladies allowed in room). This test should show where his white blood cells are gathering which would be an indication of infection. His abdominal CT scan suggest to the doctors a possibility of infection, abscess, collection of fluid, or some tissue damage to an area inside the pelvic cavity. We should know more on that tomorrow afternoon when we have a conference with all five of his major doctors (hopefully all) to discuss James care. Please pray for Gods direction for that time. Thankfully James had no fever today and his blood pressure was good without medication.

January 28th - Although James condition basically did not change today, the infectious disease doctor did not have many encouraging words. He is very concerned about the different infections going on in James body. He said the infections could take his life. There has been increased secretions around the trach as well as another area that he is concerned about so they took cultures and will be watching closely. Thankfully, the cultures in his blood have come back negative. This could be a turning point for James, either for better or quite possibly for worse. Please pray for Gods healing and continue to thank our Lord for His kindness and mercy that has been seen through this all. He has been our very present help in times of trouble.

January 27th - James had a fever last night of 103 but it has come down today to 100. Blood was given this morning as well as medicine to slow down the bleeding from the wounds after surgery. By afternoon this was under control. James seemed to be resting more comfortably after his pain medication was increased. Please do not grow weary from praying or become discouraged as we walk through this long and low valley. Our God has promised He will never leave us or forsake us.

January 26th - Todays surgery was not as expected as the doctors found a much greater area in need of debridement. Surgery lasted five hours instead of the one hour as expected. The doctors were confident they removed all the affected buttocks area but are concerned about a possiblility of another area. The treatment of this would be very difficult. A revision of the amputation was also done. James surgeons will be consulting with other specialists for information on other modes of treatment. We still know that God is in control and has a plan that includes the greatest good for James and all those whose his life has touched. Please, please continue to pray, giving thanks and praise and laying our requests and burdens down before our good and gracious God.

January 25th - Today was a more difficult day as the doctors again informed Cathy that some of the infections are resistant to the present antibiotics being used (this has been an ongoing problem). They are using their last available antibiotic that they know of which may cover his present infection. This antibiotic from the fifties has a potential side effect of kidney problems. Please pray for the effectiveness of this medicine with no complications. Also, there has been another surgery scheduled for tomorrow morning at 7:30 to do some more debridement to the buttocks area. The doctor did say that it should be superficial debridement. James spiked a fever this afternoon. It could be from the dead tissue, from infection or even from the dressing change done the day before. James appeared more uncomfortable today even with doubling his pain medication (morphine). Please pray for his pain to decrease and for only a scarce amount of tissue to be found in need of debridement during surgery.

January 24th - Not much changed today. His central line was changed in radiology. His vitals stayed within normal range (very slight fever). The doctors are discussing doing a CT scan of an area in question. Nothing is scheduled as of now. Thanks for giving blood if you were able. There may be another opportunity in the future. Please continue to pray for the healing process without any further complications.

January 23rd - Basically, James condition has not changed since yesterday. No fever, stable B/P without the aid of medication. His kidneys are improving ever so slowly, but there is improvement. He had dialysis today with two units of blood. The blood drive is on for tomorrow. Anyone who can come would be great! Eat a good meal before you come. Tip: The hospital staff usually come to give blood on their lunch break around 12 - 1 so it can be busier at that time. The quieter time is usually from 2 -4. Remember it is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Please come if you can. Let them know you're there for James.

January 22nd - Today is day 36 since the original surgery. The nurses had to give James quite a bit of fluids and blood to recuperate from the stress and blood loss during surgery. James' blood pressure has been on the low side of normal but this with medications. The nurse has been adjusting the meds up and down to find the least amount of medication with the best possible pressure. He has had only a slight fever today. They are constantly reviewing possible infection sites and the best mode of treatment. Again they are discussing changing his central line (used for dialysis) and his pic line (picc line - peripherally inserted central catheter - used for long term intravenous therapy) to eliminate a potential source of infection. After a discussion with the doctor, we asked the nurse to see how much blood or blood products that James has received. They only had his most recent chart from January 9 to present. He had had approximately 85 pints of blood for these last thirteen days alone. We thought perhaps those that could, would come to Northridge Hospital on Thursday and give blood in James name. They are having a BLOOD DRIVE from 11:00 - 5:00 on January 24th in the Education Auditorium. Please come if you can. Contact Diane for any questions at 714-3227. There is a long road ahead; healing and other various surgeries. James is still critical. Please continue to pray for healing and pray with thanksgiving for all He has done.

January 22nd - James surgery ended up lasting for five and 1/2 hours last night. The doctors were very meticulous to check and recheck the leg tissue to assess the need for the amputation. Their was not enough viable tissue to have a functioning leg so the doctors removed the leg half way down between the knee and the hip. There was one good muscle that they are hoping will give James assistance with the prosthetic. He returned to ICU but his blood pressure was low and they were giving him more blood and fluids to stabilize his pressure. God continues to be so gracious to James and his family with the many wonders He has done. Please pray for the healing of all his wounds, for his kidneys and infections, for his lungs to become strong and be able to breathe on his own as well as for his emotional and spiritual health for when they reduce the sedation and explain his condition to James.

January 21st - At 8:30 p.m. this evening James just went in for surgery. The surgery will last for 3 hours. Please pray for Gods wisdom and guidance to fall upon the surgeons and nurses as they take care of James.

January 20th - James has a slight fever (100.8) and his blood pressure is on the low side of normal. He had dialysis today along with some extra blood. The doctors say James is losing blood and are not sure of the source besides from the drainage of the wounds. This does not seem to worry the doctors. In the best interest of all patients, James surgery will be the last surgery of the day due to his different infections. Surgery is tomorrow afternoon; the time will be specified in the morning. Keep praying for a miracle. The surgeons said they would check the tissue in surgery before they make the final decision of amputation. Whatever Gods will is - We will trust that it is best.

January 19th - James vitals were good today; blood pressure okay without medications and no fever. The chest x-ray showed some haziness but the pulmonary doctor is not overly concerned because James lab values are good. His kidneys continue to show improvement and he did not need dialysis today. His surgery is scheduled for Monday afternoon (We don't know the exact time). The doctors are still discussing the details of the amputation. Pray for their wisdom and for God to guide them in all that they do. If there was ever a time to pray for a miracle, this is it. We know that nothing is impossible with God. No matter what He chooses to do, we will praise His worthy Name!

January 18th - James was in surgery for about four hours. The surgeons were happy to see granulation (a good sign of healing) in the buttocks area. They are very optimistic that this area will heal. They did find that the leg is not viable. Normally dead tissue would be necrotic (dark gray or blackened dead tissue). James muscle looks different than that but what they see visually (consistency) as well as microscopically is not living. They are therefore advising to amputate the leg which would also aid in healing to other areas of concern. Cathy has some peace in this decision knowing that God's grace is always covering James. His condition has been a miracle in that he is still here with us today. Praise God! The amputation will be scheduled in the next few days. Pray fervently on behalf of James and Cathy and also for the wisdom and skill of the doctors.

January 17th - James had a good day with continued stable blood pressure without medication and only a slight fever around 100.6. The doctors have scheduled yet another surgery to remove a smaller amount of dead tissue. It is scheduled for tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.. They are also still very concerned about the infections and will again be replacing his central line to eliminate any infection possibilities at this site. He is still ventilator dependent and remains sedated. Please continue to go before our gracious God asking for healing and strength and opportunity to honor His Name.

January 16th - James' fever dropped below 100 today. His blood pressure is still good, he did not require dialysis today, and his white blood cell count was almost normal. These are all good signs! Praise God! His wound dressings were changed today and observed by the surgeon who determined the need for minor surgery which will happen over the weekend. James continues to fight a variety of bacterial infections so please keep praying for improvement. Even though James is still in critical condition, we can rejoice in that even the smallest improvement is a huge gain. Thanks be to our mighty God.

January 15th - James is still off blood pressure medication but back on dialysis today. He is still running a fever and is on several antibiotics for the various bacterial infections. The doctor is very concerned at the possibilty of James becoming resistant to them as his condition becomes more complex. Pray these medications quickly and thoroughly rid his body of infection.

January 14th - James is recovering from yesterday's long surgery. He is still off of blood pressure medication and did not require dialysis today. Those are good things. However, he is still running a fever and fighting some infections. Please continue to pray.

January 13th - God is so gracious! Today was a favorable day. James was in surgery for approximately six hours. The doctors removed all dead muscle tissue from the buttocks area. A fair amount of blood was lost but that shows improvement in that it indicates a good blood flow to the area. Six pints of blood were given in replacement. The sciatic nerve was viewed and appeared intact for proper nerve function in the future. Because the Iliac vein was tied off in the initial surgery, doctors hoped for a compensation of venous blood to be rerouted through other veins as the bodies natural healing process takes place. The doctors were happy to see this in effect. The inner thigh area of concern was opened and viewed and appears to have viable tissue. Two biopsies were taken from that area to confirm a healthy tissue. Yeast continues to be a problem from continuous antibiotics. Other measures are being given to hopefully eliminate this problem. Skin integrity is always a high concern for bedridden patients. Another surgical procedure was done to reduce any additional causes of skin breakdown. James continues to have secondary infections common to patients in long term hospital care. Medications are being given to treat this as well. The doctors are fearful of him becoming resistant to newer antibiotics and may need to revert back to some medications from the fifties. These should be effective but do have some possible side effects of concern. The doctors say it is truly remarkable that James has survived to this point. We know who is remarkable; our good and gracious God.

January 12th - James will be going in to surgery at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. As previously mentioned, the surgeon's will be looking for tissue damage that might be the cause of the fever hes been fighting. If this area is bad, he will again face the door of a possible amputation of his left leg. Please pray they will find none or very little, and that the door will shut again. They will also be examining previous surgical areas and managing their status. He was off medication for blood pressure for the second day, which is good, but many other factors need to become and remain stable for him to be transferred to USC. While the specialist from USC will not be involved in the surgery, he has been advised and agrees on the necessity and course of action to be taken tomorrow. Please pray for healing for James and wisdom for the doctors.

January 11th - James did not need any blood pressure medication today as it was normalizing. He is still running a fever on average of 102 and that has the doctor perplexed and is not a good sign. His wound nurse, whos job is just to dress and re-dress his wounds, is very pleased with the healing process of the calf and the thigh areas. The doctors are meeting tomorrow morning early to discuss potentially another surgery deep inside his thigh which may be the source of the infection which may be linked to his fever. Our prayers should remain for wisdom for the medical team on James' case, continuation of all of his vitals to stabilizing and Godspeed in his relocation to USC medical center.

One of the two main physicians caring for James continues to be amazed on how strong James' body is in fighting against all of the infections and complications... "this man James, is an enigma".

January 10th - 10:00 p.m. - The doctors did another debridement late this afternoon to remove dead tissue. They were pleased to find a good amount of blood flow to the underlying tissue. They needed to give him an additional four pints of blood for a total of eight pints today. They don't like to have to do so much. His blood pressure dropped very low but has come up again now. His condition continues to be critical with his life on the line.

January 10th - James had a fairly good day. His blood pressure was good but still aided by medication. His temp. was around 101 and other lab values were improved. While being dialyzed, James received four pints of blood in preparation for the debridement which is not yet scheduled. Please continue to pray.

January 9th - It was a long and difficult day today. The doctors had to do a large area of debridement. They also had a conference to discuss James care and the possibility of the specialist coming to Northridge to give his evaluation instead of transporting James all the way to USC. The specialist was gracious to come. He told us that they would accept James as a patient but that he wasn't stable enough for the transport or to do anything at their facility under his present physical condition. James is very sick. Before he can be transported he must be able to maintain a strong blood pressure without the assistance of medication and have only a mild fever. There are many varying factors but pray he would become stable and able to be taken to USC for further treatments. His case is very difficult to manage. Cathy was encouraged to know that this doctor would have done the same treatments and care as his present physicians. Please continue to pray with diligence.

January 8th - Praise God! James lab values were such that he did not need dialysis today. Every victory counts. Also today some of his IV lines were changed to alleviate possible infection from those sites. His fever continues but not as high as yesterday(102). The doctors are basically agreeing that he is not yet ready to be transferred even if they had the okay from the specialist to take the case. Keep praying for James and everything surrounding him. Thank you so much for your diligence.

January 7th - James is still running a high fever (103+). A yeast infection from taking so many antibiotics has developed so a new medication is being added as well as changing his feeding therapy (which is done through a tube from nose to stomach) to something different that does not add to this problem. The doctors are also changing his central line to avoid possibilities of infection at that site. There is no word from the specialist at this time. Please continue to pray for James healing and all the surrounding circumstances. This is one of those areas where we can pray without ceasing. There have been many opportunities for us to encourage and pray with family and friends of other patients in ICU. This is counted as a great joy and privilege. Please pray for those families as well.

January 6th - Dead tissue was removed in James calf, thigh, some muscle and tissue from the buttocks area during a five hour surgery early this morning. The doctors did find viable tissue underneath with a small amount of blood flow. As in many prolonged ventilator dependent patients, a tracheostomy was put in to avoid any tissue damage in that area. During a conference with three of James doctors, Cathy was informed that they would like to have James transferred to another hospital and have his care taken over by a specialist in reconstructive surgery, grafting or amputation if necessary. They are hoping to arrange this at USC (extension) within the next few days. Cathy has developed a trusting relationship with many of the doctors and will be sad to leave their care but is trusting that God will provide just the right team of doctors to care best for James. Please continue to pray for James leg and buttocks area as well as for his kidneys to improve. Pray specifically for the right team of doctors at the right time and the right place. There is talk of decreasing the sedation which will mean explaining to James what has been taking place. Please pray for James emotional, physical and spiritual health in preparation for this time.

January 5th - The doctors have been concerned with an area of James outer buttock where the tissue has some breakdown. They are still not sure if it is a pressure sore from being bed ridden for these twenty days or if it may be an area of breakdown related to the leg. They have scheduled surgery for tomorrow morning at 7:30 to do debridement (scraping away any dead tissue) and also to see how deep it is affecting this muscle. They have also changed the antibiotic he is on since the last one doesn't seem to be working any longer. This new antibiotic has some side effects that may be difficult for James condition but the infection must be stopped and this appears to be the best course of action. James fever has been between 102.8 this a.m. to 101 this afternoon. Please keep him in your daily prayers. Also please pray for all the details of life that continue on around Cathy and her family.

January 5th - Cathy spoke with James nurse this morning and found that James has a high fever today, (102.8). Please pray for knowledge for the doctors and the nurses. They will probably be putting a cooling blanket on him to bring down the fever. As you may know, fever may indicate infection. Pray, pray, pray. They have scheduled the tracheotomy for Monday.

January 4th - The doctors have decided to put in a trachestomy in the next few days. Please pray for the right doctor and the right conditions for this procedure. While doing an intricate dressing change on James leg, they found some gray tissue. They have not decided exactly what or when they will be addressing this. Please, please know that James condition remains critical and we should continue to pray earnestly for him. There is much healing needed. Please lift Cathy and the doctors up in prayer for endurance through this time.

January 3rd - James vitals continue to be stable but the pulmonary doctor decided to hold off on trying to take him off the ventilator at this time. He is having dialysis today and recuperating from yesterdays surgery. Please continue to pray for healing that amazes the doctors.

January 2nd - James was in surgery for approximately 3 hours. The doctors removed some tissue from his leg and were surprised to find improvements in the leg tissue. They will be having a wound nurse specialist coming in to care for his leg. His kidneys also showed some improvement for the first time. The doctors are amazed at the improvement and they don't get it. All Glory to God. Please don't stop praying these are still critical days. Pray for continued healing. Tomorrow they are discussing to see how he would do without the ventilator and they may try discontinuing it. If he doesn't respond well they may do a tracheostomy so not to damage any tissue around the breathing tube. Please pray for a good response. Praise our mighty God.

January 1st - James is going into surgery tomorrow afternoon to remove any dead muscle tissue and change the wound dressings on his leg. Please pray they will find little or no dead muscle tissue and see an overall improvement in his leg.

December 31th - The door closed for the initial doctor to come in for the second opinion but within an hour, God provided a different doctor to give an evaluation. His findings were relatively similar to James attending physicians. James remains stable and is showing some signs of clinical improvement. The doctors are not scheduling a surgery for amputation at this time. James will not be receiving dialysis tomorrow to see how his kidneys react. Please continue to pray for his leg and kidneys. Also please pray for Cathy and the many decisions she has to make concerning James care.

December 31th - James had a difficult night due to the decrease in sedation medication which makes him more aware of the breathing tube. The natural instinct is to cough or bite down on the tube so the doctors have again decided to keep him heavily sedated. They are still waiting to hear when the second opinion doctor will be in.

December 30th - James did not have his surgery today. God is SO good. (no matter what!). We have seen little glimpses of our great God at work during this whole trial, knowing full well He is doing so much more than what we see. James has had a good day overall. His vital signs are strong without the support of medicine and he didn't have any fever until only slightly as we were leaving this evening. His lab values are showing improvements and decreasing signs of sepsis. The doctors are encouraged and are postponing surgery at this time. Dialysis will be continued daily. They have stopped his sedation medicine but he will continue on very strong pain medicines which keep him comfortable and mostly asleep. He did respond appropriatly to Cathy a few times today which was very encouraging to her. God has provided a doctor to come in for a second opinion possibly tomorrow or when needed. This doctor is a well renown cardio vascular surgeon who "happens" to be on staff at Northridge Hospital. (imagine that!) James is still critical and may still have to have this surgery so please continue to pray for James, for Cathy and family and for the doctors and nurses. Also please pray that opportunities would be taken to share our amazing God. Cathy has felt the power of prayer and gives her heartfelt thanks.

December 30th - James will be going into surgery at 10:30 a.m. This surgery is being considered life saving. It will help to alleviate the toxins that are affecting the kidneys and contributing to the sepsis. His condition is stable but critical as well.
The doctors have exhausted all of their sources and the only solution is amputation. The doctors have given permission to have a physician outside of their network to give a second opinion. If you know of anyone who would be available please contact Diane Manzo at 661.714.3227 as time is running out. The person would would have to be an ortho, general or vascular surgeon.
Cathy is confident that God is in control and is opening and closing doors. She is trusting in him for the outcome.
Please continue to pray for James!

December 29th - The Doctors are saying the procedure to amputate his leg is urgently needed at this time to protect James' life. Cathy is hoping a second opinion will be made available, but she will of course, give consent when they are ready to start. James is very weak and the surgery will be hard on his body. He has a high fever. Please pray for James' strength and that if they go ahead with the amputation that this will be the solution.
Currently Andrew Daymude and Jenny Young are with Cathy Daniels. Please continue to pray!!!

December 28th - The surgeons came out during todays surgery and they told Cathy that they do not see the leg tissue being viable or alive. They are suggesting to amputate his leg but have given her the opportunity for a second opinion. Sunday is the latest they can wait. Cathy is going to get a second opinion as an opportunity to allow God to do a miracle or a confirmation to proceed forward. Please pray for wisdom for this new doctor who is hand picked by God. This is still a very critical stage in James recovery.

December 28th - James is having surgery at 11 a.m. to remove any dead muscle tissue in his leg. He also has had a bit of a fever. Please continue to pray that God continues to heal his body.

December 26th - James condition has remained basically unchanged for today. His leg wounds are draining properly. The doctors will be evaluating his leg tissue on Friday with the possibility of surgery at that time if needed. Continue to pray that his leg wounds would heal quickly, that his kidneys would begin functioning normally, and for his emotional/spiritual health (as he comes to, as the sedation decreases). Cathy has been encouraged by the many e-mails and phone calls she has received. Unfortunately, she is unable to respond to such a great show of love but please continue to e-mail encouraging words. Please direct all phone calls to Diane Manzo at 661.714.3227.

December 25th - James is doing well after surgery and the doctors are still cautiously optimistic. He is still on a ventilator at this time. Please keep praying for his leg and that more of the muscle tissue does not die off. Also continue to pray that his kidneys wake up and start to function on their own.

December 24th - James came out of surgery around 7:55 p.m. and everything went well. They removed some muscle tissue that was dying. When they scraped some of the muscle off there was healthy muscle underneath which has a fresh blood flow. They took some muscle off of his thigh as well as some on his calf. He is doing well. They will hope to start weening him off of the ventilator tomorrow. He will also continue to be on dialysis. Please continue to pray for James and that his body continues to be healed.

December 24th - Please pray for James as he will be going into surgery today around 4:00 p.m. to remove 2 areas of dead muscle in his leg.
